Sound healing is becoming more widely known, but it is still one of those things people often struggle to explain until they have experienced it for themselves.
At its simplest, sound healing uses vibration, rhythm, resonance and intentional sound to support relaxation, reflection and wellbeing. It may include instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, drums, tuning forks, therapeutic percussion and the voice.
Sound healing is often described as relaxing, and it often is. A gong bath or sound bath can help people rest, soften, breathe more deeply and step out of the noise of everyday life. They are fantastic for relaxation, quietening the mind, and even for getting a good night’s sleep!
But sound healing, especially in a one-to-one therapeutic setting, is so much more.
In a one-to-one session, the practitioner is working with the person in front of them, they are not working to a formula; they’re working with where their client is in that moment. That might mean supporting someone who feels stuck, drained, overwhelmed, disconnected, guarded, tense, emotionally heavy, lacking confidence, struggling to speak up, or carrying old patterns that no longer feel helpful.
And whilst some treatments might be relaxing, others will be deliberately energising; it all depends on the intent of the treatment. Used well, sound healing can create or break boundaries as the client needs; it can release old patterns, clear stagnant energy, help someone find their voice, or step into a stronger sense of self.

Perhaps surprisingly, Sound Healing isn’t really about the sound at all. By which I mean it’s not about what you hear, but about what the sound does to you. A sound healing treatment works to support change in the whole system: physical, emotional, mental, energetic and spiritual.
Whilst many treatments will sound lovely to the ears, the practitioner’s focus is on the energy they are creating with their instruments. Because, that’s what sound is – energy. Until it reaches our ears and the brain translates it into something we recognise as sound, it is actually energy – soundwaves – moving through the air, moving into our system, vibrating in the air (and the fluid in the ear), and it’s this energy, the soundwaves doing most of the work.
It’s why I am passionate about good training. When sound is used therapeutically, it is not just about picking up an instrument and playing whatever comes to mind. A trained practitioner thinks about the person or group in front of them, the desired outcome, the structure of the session, the instruments being used, the volume, the pace, contraindications, and the aftercare.
Sound healing can be gentle, powerful, grounding, emotional, spacious or deeply restful. It is not one-size-fits-all, and it should not be treated as a performance.
Someone may come because they want to feel calmer. Someone else may come because they feel unable to move forward in life. Another person may want to feel more confident at work, prepare for an important conversation, reconnect with creativity, or shift an old pattern that keeps repeating.
Of course, sound healing does not replace medical care, counselling or practical action. It is not a magic wand, although sometimes, even after 20 years as a Sound Healer, I still wonder if it really is magic, because I am still constantly amazed by the results!. But it can be a powerful supportive therapy because it works beyond words. It gives the body and energy system a different way to respond, release and reorganise.
At Earthtones, our training is about developing that deeper understanding needed to treat individuals. It is practical, grounded and rooted in real therapeutic work. Students learn how to use sound not just to create a relaxing experience, but to support meaningful change.
There is something very special about seeing a client move out of old patterns, or find themselves again, and knowing you helped them to do that. Used with care, skill and intention, sound can become a powerful tool for healing, transformation and growth.
