This week’s Monday Mantra card is Nataraj, Shiva as Lord of the Dance.
It is one of the most beautiful and powerful images in Hindu tradition: Shiva dancing the cosmic dance. This isn’t just any dance; Nataraj represents the rhythm of the whole universe: creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment and grace. Nataraj reminds us that life is always moving.
Things begin. Things end. We change. We grow. We resist change, and then it happens anyway because life doesn’t ask for our permission.
The card’s blessings include fearlessness, joy of creativity, music and dance, and finding pleasure in all circumstances of life. That feels especially fitting for mantra practice, because mantra itself has rhythm. It is sound, repetition, breath and vibration. Even when we are sitting still, something is moving inside us.
A Simple Mantra for Nataraj
For this week’s practice, we used:
Om Naṭarājāya Namaḥ
Pronunciation:
Om Na-ta-raa-jaa-ya Na-ma-ha
Meaning:
Salutations to Nataraj, Lord of the Dance.
This mantra is lovely for moments when we feel stuck, creatively blocked, fearful, or resistant to change. It invites us to remember that movement doesn’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes one breath is enough. One step. One small choice.
How to Practise
You can keep this very simple:
Sit comfortably.
Take a few natural breaths.
Repeat Om Naṭarājāya Namaḥ for 2–5 minutes (or, for one mala if you have one)
Let the rhythm carry you.
Afterwards, sit quietly for a few breaths and notice what feels different.
If you prefer a more physical practice, you could also allow a little gentle movement: rolling the shoulders, swaying slightly, or simply feeling the pulse of the mantra in the body.
A Thought for the Week
Nataraj reminds us that change is not always something to fear. Sometimes life is asking us to move with it rather than hold ourselves rigid against it.
This week’s mantra can support creative courage, trust in the rhythm of life, and the willingness to let old patterns fall away.
May I move with life, not against it.
May creativity, courage and grace guide my steps.
