Something you might not know about me … When I Something you might not know about me ...

When I was 18, I hitch-hiked to Paris with a boy I’d met the night before.

It was my first year at university, and students from Bath Uni and Bath Spa were doing a charity hitch-hike. The challenge was to leave our student union in male/female pairs and reach the Eiffel Tower within 24 hours. We weren’t allowed to pay for transport, apart from the ferry.

My university was about 75% female, so there weren’t enough partners to go round. My friend Paula lent me her good friend Matt, whom she’d known for years. I met him at about 10pm, spent an hour with him in the student union, and agreed to meet him outside at 5am to set off for France.

Thankfully, he turned out to be funny, kind and very good company.

There were six of us trying to stay together: Geoff and his girlfriend, Paula and Nick, and me and Matt. Matt and I set off first, walked the mile-long road off campus and got a lift fairly quickly to Salisbury. Then a truck driver picked us up. He’d heard about the hitch-hike on the radio and recognised our hats.

On the way to Portsmouth, a pigeon hit the truck. There was an enormous bang and feathers everywhere. I cried.

We met the others at the ferry and crossed to Le Havre. Once in France, Matt and I got another lift from a truck driver who offered to take us all the way to Paris. But we’d promised to meet the others in Rouen, so that’s where we went.

There was only one passenger seat. I sat on a plastic box between Matt and the driver, with no seatbelt. The box kept sliding about, so Matt had to hold on to me. I’m fairly sure that arrangement would horrify present-day me.

We found the others in Rouen, ate at a café and decided it was too late to carry on. The six of us curled up together on the front step of a boulangerie and slept rough.

The next morning was grey, cold and miserable. Nobody would pick us up. Nick and Matt passed some of the time riding the concrete cows in Rouen, which was entertaining for a little bit.

We're back with Varaha for a slightly deeper mantr We're back with Varaha for a slightly deeper mantra today.

Varaha, the boar avatar of VIshnu lifts the earth from the depths, to safety.

Likewise, when we feel things are heavy, we're overwhelmed and snowed under, Varaha reminds us that there is support, and we don't need to carry it all alone.

Om Namo Bhagavate Varāhāya

(Salutations to the blessed Lord Varaha.)

May we be lifted gently.
May we return to steadiness.
May what is heavy be held with care.

For tomorrow's Monday Mantra, Varaha has come roun For tomorrow's Monday Mantra, Varaha has come round again, so this week we’re using a slightly fuller mantra.

Varaha is the boar avatar of Vishnu, who lifts the Earth from the depths and restores her to safety.

This mantra is for those times when we feel heavy, buried, overwhelmed, or pulled under. Not because we need to force ourselves back up, but because support exists. What has sunk can be lifted again.

Use this mantra for grounding, restoration, courage and the reminder that you do not have to carry everything alone.

One of the most commen questions about training is One of the most commen questions about training is "do I need to be musical?"

The happy answer is no - it doesn't matter if you can't carry a tune in a bucket. Sound healing is not about music and it doesn't matter if you can't play an instrument, or sing in tune.

Make your own 108-bead mala and learn how to actua Make your own 108-bead mala and learn how to actually use it. 📿

In this relaxed, practical workshop you’ll create a mala from a selection of traditional materials. Choose from sandalwood, rudraksha, tulsi, ebony, vijyani and lotus, each with its own associations and significance.

You’ll also choose your own guru and sumeru beads, with lotus seeds available if you’d prefer one of those instead, and finish your mala with either a tassel, lotus or Om charm.

As well as making your mala, we’ll explore:

✨ the traditional structure of a mala
✨ how to use it for japa and mantra practice
✨ how to move through the beads
✨ the meaning and pronunciation of three simple mantras
✨ how to build a straightforward personal practice at home

You’ll leave with your completed mala and the knowledge to use it, rather than a lovely string of beads that sits on a shelf wondering what its purpose in life is. 😂

No previous experience is needed and all materials are included.

Tomorrow's Monday Mantra will be the Gāyatrī mantr Tomorrow's Monday Mantra will be the Gāyatrī mantra.

Gāyatrī Devī is connected with sacred knowledge, devotion, concentration and the light of wisdom. The Gāyatrī Mantra is one of the most loved and widely used mantras in Hindu practice. It is often understood as a prayer for illumination: may our minds be guided towards truth, wisdom and right understanding.

For Monday Mantra, we’re not using this as a demand for answers. We’re using it as a way to turn towards light. When life feels noisy, confusing or heavy, this mantra invites us to pause and ask: what helps me see more clearly?

Skanda is often described as a warrior deity, but for mantra practice we don’t need to take that literally. This is not about aggression or fighting. It is about courage, focus, strategy and the wise use of strength.

You might use this mantra when you need confidence, direction, discipline, or the courage to meet what is in front of you without losing yourself.
