One of the questions people ask before booking sound healing training is whether they need to be musical. Usually, what they really mean is: Will everybody else know more than me? Will I be expected to read music? What if I cannot sing? What if I make the gong sound dreadful in front of the group?
The short answer is no. You do not need musical training to begin an Earthtones course. You don’t need to read music, or even play an instrument.
You do need to listen carefully. A practitioner must notice changes in volume, rhythm, tone, sustain and the client’s response. You need enough control to repeat a technique deliberately rather than occasionally producing the right effect by accident. That control develops through demonstration, guided practice and repetition.
Different modules place different demands on you. Tuning forks involve accurate handling and positioning rather than musical performance. Singing bowls require you to produce a clean, controlled sound and understand how different bowls and techniques can be used. Gong work asks you to manage a very wide dynamic range without assuming louder means better. Drum Therapy involves rhythm, but it is about purposeful therapeutic use rather than showing off an elaborate solo.

Mantra Therapy understandably raises the most anxiety about being musical. The practitioner chants for the client, so you do need to use your voice and be willing to practise. You do not need a trained singer’s voice. Stability, pronunciation, breath, repetition and intention matter far more than sounding like somebody who ought to be on a stage.
The other skills involved in practitioner work are not musical at all. You need to conduct an appropriate consultation, recognise contraindications, agree a treatment focus, select techniques for a reason, maintain boundaries, keep records and review what happened. You also need to respond when a client’s experience differs from the session you imagined while planning it.
Earthtones students are assessed on their ability to deliver safe, purposeful one-to-one sound healing, not on whether they have a musical background. The Foundation Module supports every instrument course, and the case studies allow you to develop your skills over time rather than having to arrive fully formed.
If lack of musical training has been the reason you have not enquired, you can remove that from the list. Read the individual module pages, and choose the instrument you are most drawn to. Your journey starts here.
