The gong is not just loud, I promise! A well-play The gong is not just loud, I promise!

A well-played gong is not about crashing, showing off, or seeing how much sound the room can take.

What is important is control, listening, sensitivity and knowing how to build sound gradually.

Sometimes the gong can feel powerful and clearing. Sometimes it can feel soft, spacious and almost ocean-like. Sometimes the most important part is not the big sound at all, but the quiet that follows it.

This photo is from the early days of Earthtones, and even then, the lesson was the same: the gong is not an instrument you dominate. It is one you listen to.

That's why I teach gong work as a therapeutic skill, not a performance.

Being loud is easy. Sensitivity takes practice.

Tomorrow's Monday Mantra is to Kama Deva. Kama De Tomorrow's Monday Mantra is to Kama Deva.

Kama Deva is the god of love, beauty, desire and delight.

Whilst his help can be sought for success in love and romance, and enhanced sexual performance, I'm not in the business of love spells!

So tomorrow's manta will be to help us reconnect with joy, affection, humour, creativity and the simple pleasure of being alive.

Sound healing is not just making nice sounds in a Sound healing is not just making nice sounds in a calm room.

That may be how people first experience it, especially in a sound bath, and that's totally valid, but one-to-one sound healing goes much deeper.

In the way I teach it, sound healing is therapeutic energy work.

It can support relaxation, but it can also be used to clear stuck energy, strengthen boundaries, shift old patterns, support confidence, or help someone find their voice.

It can also support physical pain, grief, overwhelm, burnout, fear, visibility, decision-making, or that feeling of “I know something needs to change, but I can’t quite get there.”

The instruments all have different qualities. A trained practitioner learns how to choose and use them with intention. This is why training matters.

A practitioner needs to know how to listen, what to notice, when to build sound, when to soften, when to clear, when to ground, and when to do less. Sound healing is working with sound, vibration, energy and intention in a way that is safe, responsive and meaningful.

A new blog post for your delectation and delight! A new blog post for your delectation and delight!

(actually, there are six new blog posts - five of them about cacao, as I build a knowledge base of all things cacao - and you can find them immediately before this one one on the blog page of the website)

But back to this one - what is Sound Healing *actually*? And how does it work? (My standard answer of "magic" isn't very accurate, so I've been a bit more (a lot more) truthful in this post!

How are you coping with this heat? I got up at 6.30 this morning and made dairy free cacao ice cream, and then had a huge bowl of it for breakfast! (it's actually horribly healthy, though it doesn't taste like it!)
Sound healing is often misunderstood. It is not j Sound healing is often misunderstood.

It is not just loud gongs, background music, or playing nice instruments whilst people relax.

At its heart, sound healing is about sensitivity, listening, vibration, presence and knowing how to create a safe, supportive space. All of this contributes to the shift - making changes to the client's energy so they can move beyond where they are, old patterns and stuck energy.

That is why training matters. It helps you understand not just what to play, but how, when, why, and for whom.

Save this if you are curious about learning sound healing properly.

Oh, I know it's too hot for doing much of anything Oh, I know it's too hot for doing much of anything but if you can bear to, have a read of the post I've written about Nataraj from this week's Monday Mantra.

And let me know, would you like a post about all the avatars of Vishnu?

PS wear suncream and keeping drinking water! (I know you know, but it doesn't hurt to remind you in this heat!)
What is sound healing, really? Sound healing is o What is sound healing, really?

Sound healing is often described as “relaxing sounds”, and it's true, it can be *really* relaxing. But there is more to it than simply lying down while lovely instruments are played around you.

Sound healing works with vibration, rhythm, resonance, stillness and intention. It invites the body and mind to soften, settle and listen.

Sessions should change with the client, giving them what they need in the moment. They include one or more of gongs, singing bowls, tuning forks, drum, and voice work. All sessions using the Earthtones method also include silence.

For me, sound healing isn’t about performance. It’s not about showing off how many instruments you own (though we all know how addictive instruments can be!). It’s about creating a safe, supportive space where sound can help the nervous system settle, the breath deepen, and the whole person feel more connected. And that’s when the work really begins, when we can get to the root of the issue and help you move through it.

This is why I’m passionate about proper training. Playing instruments is the easy bit. Knowing what effect they will have, and how to create the effect your client needs is more tricky.

Have you experienced a sound healing treatment before, or are you curious from a safe distance?

Nataraj is Shiva as Lord of the Dance: the cosmic dance of creation, change and renewal.
