Bhadrakali is a fierce protective form of the Goddess. Her energy is not gentle in the fluffy sense, but it is deeply protective.

She reminds us that sometimes devotion means courage. Sometimes it means boundaries. Sometimes it means facing what is uncomfortable, instead of pretending everything is fine.

This week’s mantra is:

Om Śrī Bhadrakālyai Namaḥ

You might use this mantra when you need strength, protection, courage, or the ability to stand steady in the face of fear.

May we be protected.
May we meet fear with courage.
May fierce compassion guide us.

Overcoming Obstacles to being a Sound Healer Befo Overcoming Obstacles to being a Sound Healer

Before I could learn to help anyone else, I had to work out how on earth I was going to manage the training.

I had three young children. My health was poor, and my disability and mobility difficulties made getting around hard enough already.

The training meant being away from home for a week at a time.

Then there was the money.

All the instrument modules were taught together, so I needed the instruments to go with them. Course fees and a substantial instrument bill, all landing at once.

I wanted to learn. But wanting it didn’t arrange childcare, pay for instruments or make my body cooperate.

And after managing all that, there was another frustration.

We learnt basic playing techniques face to face, but how that translated into treatments was taught through videos which were poorly lit, making it a less than ideal teaching format.

I did complete the training. But I remembered how much harder the format had made it.

When I developed the Earthtones courses, those experiences mattered.

The Foundation theory module is studied at home. The practical instrument modules are taught over two days, and you can choose which ones to take.

You can work towards the Diploma by studying the Foundation module and three instrument modules within 18 months, spreading your learning and instrument purchases over that time. All of the instrument modules can also be studied as standalone qualifications.

During the practical modules, we work on how to correctly play the instruments, and then how use them within a treatment. Afterwards, coursework, case studies and feedback help you develop that understanding further.

There is still work to do. Training takes time, money and practice. I know those are real commitments.

But having children, a disability, a full time job or a limited budget does not tell me anything about your potential to become a thoughtful, capable practitioner.

It tells me you have practical things to consider.

If you’re interested in Earthtones training but unsure how you could manage it, have a look at the courses at earthtones.co.uk or email me at admin@earthtones.co.uk with your questions.
You are allowed to be a beginner. You do not need You are allowed to be a beginner.

You do not need a room full of instruments.

You do not need to be musical, or have a dramatic story about being “called” to sound healing.

You can be fascinated by it and still have a hundred questions.

In fact, questions are a good sign. Why this sound? Why this client? What changed? What would I do differently next time?

That is how you begin to think like a practitioner.

You learn the techniques. You practise with other people. You get feedback. You make the occasional noise you didn’t intend to make. Then you practise some more.

Nobody needs you to arrive at training already knowing how to do the thing you came to learn.

Something you might not know about me … When I Something you might not know about me ...

When I was 18, I hitch-hiked to Paris with a boy I’d met the night before.

It was my first year at university, and students from Bath Uni and Bath Spa were doing a charity hitch-hike. The challenge was to leave our student union in male/female pairs and reach the Eiffel Tower within 24 hours. We weren’t allowed to pay for transport, apart from the ferry.

My university was about 75% female, so there weren’t enough partners to go round. My friend Paula lent me her good friend Matt, whom she’d known for years. I met him at about 10pm, spent an hour with him in the student union, and agreed to meet him outside at 5am to set off for France.

Thankfully, he turned out to be funny, kind and very good company.

There were six of us trying to stay together: Geoff and his girlfriend, Paula and Nick, and me and Matt. Matt and I set off first, walked the mile-long road off campus and got a lift fairly quickly to Salisbury. Then a truck driver picked us up. He’d heard about the hitch-hike on the radio and recognised our hats.

On the way to Portsmouth, a pigeon hit the truck. There was an enormous bang and feathers everywhere. I cried.

We met the others at the ferry and crossed to Le Havre. Once in France, Matt and I got another lift from a truck driver who offered to take us all the way to Paris. But we’d promised to meet the others in Rouen, so that’s where we went.

There was only one passenger seat. I sat on a plastic box between Matt and the driver, with no seatbelt. The box kept sliding about, so Matt had to hold on to me. I’m fairly sure that arrangement would horrify present-day me.

We found the others in Rouen, ate at a café and decided it was too late to carry on. The six of us curled up together on the front step of a boulangerie and slept rough.

The next morning was grey, cold and miserable. Nobody would pick us up. Nick and Matt passed some of the time riding the concrete cows in Rouen, which was entertaining for a little bit.

We're back with Varaha for a slightly deeper mantr We're back with Varaha for a slightly deeper mantra today.

Varaha, the boar avatar of VIshnu lifts the earth from the depths, to safety.

Likewise, when we feel things are heavy, we're overwhelmed and snowed under, Varaha reminds us that there is support, and we don't need to carry it all alone.

Om Namo Bhagavate Varāhāya

(Salutations to the blessed Lord Varaha.)

May we be lifted gently.
May we return to steadiness.
May what is heavy be held with care.

For tomorrow's Monday Mantra, Varaha has come roun For tomorrow's Monday Mantra, Varaha has come round again, so this week we’re using a slightly fuller mantra.

Varaha is the boar avatar of Vishnu, who lifts the Earth from the depths and restores her to safety.

This mantra is for those times when we feel heavy, buried, overwhelmed, or pulled under. Not because we need to force ourselves back up, but because support exists. What has sunk can be lifted again.

Use this mantra for grounding, restoration, courage and the reminder that you do not have to carry everything alone.

One of the most commen questions about training is One of the most commen questions about training is "do I need to be musical?"

The happy answer is no - it doesn't matter if you can't carry a tune in a bucket. Sound healing is not about music and it doesn't matter if you can't play an instrument, or sing in tune.
